About this calculator

Calculates real-valued powers and the base raised to the reciprocal exponent. The inverse output is 1 ÷ result. A negative base with a fractional exponent, zero with a negative exponent, or an overflow has no finite real result here and shows an input error; the root is undefined when the exponent is zero.

Worked example

calculated with the default values below

Base 2 · Exponent 10 Result 1,024.000000 · Inverse (1 ÷ result) 0.00097656 · Base to the power (1 ÷ exponent) 1.071773

Formula and variables

y = b^x; 1 ÷ y; r = b^(1 ÷ x)

b
base
x
exponent
y
power result
r
root of the base

Non-finite powers and negative bases with fractional exponents return an error; 0 to a negative power is undefined. Inverse is null for a zero result; the reciprocal-exponent root is undefined when x = 0. Numeric outputs are rounded for display.

Frequently asked questions

When does this calculator show an input error?

The model supports real finite results. A negative base needs an integer exponent; zero cannot have a negative exponent, and overflow is also rejected. The inverse is undefined when the power result is zero. The separate root is base^(1/exponent), so it is undefined at exponent zero.
