Formula and variables

P = m ÷ a × 100; i* = min { i : (m+i) ÷ (a+i) × 100 ≥ T }

m
Free throws made
a

T
Target percentage
i*
Consecutive makes needed

i* is searched iteratively from 1 to 500; if the target cannot be reached within 500 makes, it returns −1.

Frequently asked questions

How many consecutive makes are needed to reach the target percentage?

The calculator adds successful free throws one at a time until (makes + new makes) ÷ (attempts + new makes) reaches the entered target, checking up to 500 additional attempts. From 82 makes in 100 attempts, reaching 85% requires 20 straight makes: 102 ÷ 120 = 85%. A miss changes the starting totals and can increase the number needed.
