About this calculator
Count words, sentences, paragraphs and grapheme characters in pasted text. Spaced writing uses whitespace tokens; Japanese, Korean, Thai and Chinese can use Unicode word segmentation when supported by the browser. With no pasted text, character, sentence and paragraph totals are rough English-based estimates from the word-count input. Pasted whitespace counts as empty text.
Worked example
calculated with the default values below
Or enter a word count 800 words · Words per page 250 words · Reading speed 220 wpm · Speaking speed 140 wpm Words 800 words · Characters with spaces 4,080 chars · Characters without spaces 3,280 chars · Sentences 44 · Paragraphs 7 · Pages 3.2 pages · Estimated reading time 3.64 min · Estimated speaking time 5.71 min

Formula and variables
reading minutes = words ÷ words/min; speaking minutes = words ÷ words/min
- N_w
- Word count
- N_s
- Sentence count
- S
- Pasted text; S_w = its whitespace-separated tokens, c_i = its i-th character
- w_p
- Words per page
- v_read
- Reading speed (wpm)
- v_speak
- Speaking speed (wpm)
Pasted text uses whitespace tokens, except supported CJK scripts use Unicode word boundaries; characters count grapheme clusters. With no pasted text, totals use rough English-based estimates (5.1 characters/word, 18 words/sentence and 120 words/paragraph). Reading or speaking minutes = word count ÷ selected words/minute rate; zero words gives no time estimate.
Frequently asked questions
How are pasted text and empty text counted?
Spaced writing is split on whitespace. Japanese, Korean, Thai and Chinese use Unicode word segmentation when the browser supports it; character totals count grapheme clusters. If nothing is pasted, the word-count field supplies an estimate and other counts use English-based averages. Pasting only spaces counts as empty text. Reading and speaking durations are numeric minutes so their units can be localized.
