About this calculator
Estimate upload time from file size per file, file count, upload speed and an adjustable efficiency factor. File sizes use decimal GB (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes), and all files are assumed to have the same size. Network congestion, protocol overhead and other activity can change the actual time; treat the result as an estimate.
Worked example
calculated with the default values below
Size per file 10 GB · Upload speed 20 Mbps · Number of files 1 · Real-world efficiency 85 % · Hours available 4 h Upload time 4,705.9 s · Fits inside the deadline? Yes — it will finish in time · Effective upload speed 17.00 Mbps · Upload time 1.31 h · Effective speed 2.13 MB/s · Time to spare 2.69 h

This record describes the implementation used by this page. It is not independent validation. External references, when available, support only the stated formula or definition; estimates and custom rules retain their own assumptions.
Formula and variables
v=V×η÷100; t=8×F×10⁹×n÷(v×10⁶); MB/s=v÷8; m=H_d−t÷3600
- F
- File size (GiB)
- n
- Number of files
- V
- Upload speed (Mbps)
- η
- Efficiency (%)
- t
- Upload time (s)
- m
- Deadline margin (h)
F is decimal GB per file (10⁹ bytes); n assumes equal-sized files; Mbps is decimal megabits/s; MB/s is decimal megabytes/s; efficiency is user-selected.
Frequently asked questions
What does the file-size input mean?
It is the size of each file. The calculator multiplies it by the file count, assumes all files are equal in size and interprets GB as decimal gigabytes (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes). The efficiency setting is an assumption, so real transfer time can differ.
