About this calculator
Enter typed characters, elapsed time and errors to calculate gross and net words per minute, accuracy and characters per minute. Uses five characters per word. This calculates speed from a measurement you already took; it does not run a timed typing test or measure speaking speed.
Worked example
calculated with the default values below
Characters typed (including spaces) 750 · Minutes 3 min · Extra seconds 0 sec · Uncorrected character errors 6 · Target speed 60 wpm Net speed 48.0 wpm · Gross speed 50.0 wpm · Characters per minute 250 cpm · Accuracy 99.2 % · Words per hour 2,880 words · Characters per second 4.2 · Time to type 1,000 words 20.8 min · Pace against your target 80 %
Method and assumptions
One standard word is five typed characters, including spaces. Gross WPM is characters divided by five and by elapsed minutes. This practice model subtracts one word-per-minute equivalent for each uncorrected character error per minute, with net WPM floored at zero. Accuracy is (characters − errors) / characters × 100. Characters per second uses the entered character count only; uncorrected errors do not imply extra backspace or correction keystrokes. The hourly count and 1,000-word time assume the calculated net rate continues unchanged. These are five-character word equivalents and extrapolations, not a timed-test score or measured physical keypress count.

Five characters per word and an uncorrected-character-error penalty per minute are this simplified practice model. Accuracy = (C − e) / C × 100; characters per second = C / (60T). Errors must not exceed characters. No skill grade is produced; hourly/1,000-word outputs extrapolate the same net rate.
Frequently asked questions
Is the typing result a standardized test score?
No. It uses five typed characters, including spaces, per standard word and a simple uncorrected-character-error penalty per minute. Net WPM is not allowed below zero. Different typing tests can count errors or words differently, so this is a practice model from measurements you enter, not a standardized test result. Characters per second is based on entered characters and does not measure physical correction keystrokes.
