About this calculator

The mode is the numeric value or values that occur most often. This calculator accepts number lists only; when every value occurs once, it reports that there is no repeated mode.

Worked example

calculated with the default values below

Numbers (comma, semicolon or space separated) 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 8, 8, 8, 9 Mode(s) 4, 8 · Highest frequency 3 · Distinct values 6 · Total values 11

Formula and variables

mode = argmaxₓ f(x), f(x) = Σᵢ 1{xᵢ = x}

mode
most frequent value
f(x)
frequency of x
x
entered values
xᵢ
i-th entered value

Accepts a comma-, semicolon-, or whitespace-separated list of up to 10,000 finite numbers. Empty entries and nonnumeric tokens are invalid. Every value tied for the maximum frequency is returned; if all values occur once, there is no repeated mode.

Frequently asked questions

What if several values tie for the highest frequency?

The result lists every tied mode. If all values occur equally often, there is no unique mode; use the frequency and distinct-value count to interpret the data.
