About this calculator
Weighted grades are unforgiving in a way that surprises people: a category worth 35 per cent can move your final mark further than every assignment combined. This shows where you stand now and what the remaining exam has to do.
Worked example
calculated with the default values below
Assignments — average score 88 % · Assignments — weight 30 % · Quizzes — average score 92 % · Quizzes — weight 10 % · Midterm — score 78 % · Midterm — weight 25 % · Final exam — expected score 85 % · Final exam — weight 35 % · Extra credit already earned 0 points · Grading scale Standard (A 90, B 80, C 70, D 60) Weighted grade 84.85 % · Letter grade B · Grade points 3.00 · Total weight entered 100 % · Best possible outcome 90.10 % · Worst possible outcome 55.10 % · Needed on the final for the next grade 99.7 % · The top letter grade A · What this means You need 99.7 per cent on the final to reach A (score 90 overall).

Formula and variables
G = Σ(s_j w_j)/Σw_j + E
- s_j
- Scores of each graded category
- w_j
- Weights of each category
- E
- Extra credit
- G
- Final weighted grade, %
- C
- Cutoff for the next higher letter
- N
- Score needed on the final
G is clamped to 0–120; letters use the selected cutoff scale; N = (C×W − B)/w_f − E×W/w_f, where W = Σw_j and B = points earned before the final.
Frequently asked questions
Why can a 35 percent final outweigh every assignment combined?
The tool weights each category as a fraction of the total weight, so the final at 35 percent moves the result more than assignments at 30 percent combined with quizzes at 10. With assignments 88, quizzes 92, midterm 78 and a final of 85, the weighted grade lands near 84.9 before extra credit. The 'needed on final' output solves the weight equation backwards to show the score required for the next letter grade.
