About this calculator
For one bird, estimate a starting minimum dimension from its measured wingspan and whether it spends most of its time inside or outside the cage. RSPCA guidance uses at least 2× wingspan for each cage dimension when the bird spends most time inside, or 1.5× when it spends most time outside. This does not size group housing or account for species-specific bar spacing, flight needs or behavior; consult an avian veterinarian or species-specific welfare guide.
Worked example
calculated with the default values below

Disclaimer
These calculators offer general guidance and do not replace veterinary advice. Individual animals vary with breed, weight, health status and medication. Suspected poisoning from chocolate, medication, plants or chemicals is an emergency — contact your veterinarian or a pet poison control service immediately rather than relying on a calculator.

Formula and variables
Minimum starting dimension = ⌈measured wingspan × 2⌉ (mostly inside) or ⌈measured wingspan × 1.5⌉ (mostly outside)
- wingspan
- measured bird wingspan (in)
- factor
- RSPCA single-bird starting factor based on time in cage
This estimates dimensions for one bird using RSPCA guidance. It does not size group housing or account for bar spacing, flight needs or species-specific behavior; seek advice from an avian veterinarian or specialist.
Frequently asked questions
Why does out-of-cage time affect the minimum dimension?
RSPCA guidance gives dimensions of at least 2× the bird’s wingspan when it spends most of its time in the cage, or 1.5× when it spends most time outside. Measure the individual bird’s wingspan. This calculator is for one bird; compatible group housing needs additional space and species-specific advice.
