About this calculator
Estimate area, time and price from dimensions, a detail multiplier, your hourly rate and minimum charge. The time and size bands are simple model assumptions; actual quotes also depend on the design, placement, artist and studio. Confirm timing and price directly with the artist.
Worked example
calculated with the default values below
Length 4 in · Width 3 in · Detail level Medium detail · Artist hourly rate (your currency) 150 · Minimum charge (same currency) 100 Tattoo area 12.00 sq in · Estimated session time 0.3 h · Estimated price (same currency) 100 · Sessions likely needed 1 · Size class Medium — up to about 4 in × 4 in

Formula and variables
H = max(0.25, 0.012LWd)
- L
- Length (in)
- W
- Width (in)
- d
- Detail factor
- H
- Tattoo time (hours)
Area = length × width. Estimated hours = max(0.25, area × 0.012 × detail factor); price = max(user minimum, hours × user hourly rate), with both monetary inputs in the same user-selected currency. Sessions = ceiling(hours ÷ 6); estimates are planning assumptions.
Frequently asked questions
How are the tattoo time and price estimates made?
Estimated hours equal area × 0.012 × a detail multiplier (0.6, 1, 1.6 or 2.2). Price is the greater of those hours times your entered hourly rate or your entered minimum charge; sessions assume up to six hours each. These are planning assumptions, not a studio quote.
