About this calculator
Viewing distance and screen size are estimated from the selected resolution, aspect ratio and use profile. These are broad planning heuristics, not a standard or a personalized comfort recommendation; eyesight, content and room setup vary.
Worked example
calculated with the default values below
Screen diagonal 55 in · Resolution 4K UHD · Aspect ratio 16:9 widescreen · Distance from seat to screen 9 ft · Main use Mixed viewing (THX style) Screen width 47.9 in · Screen height 27.0 in · Near end of estimated range 2.1 ft · Far end of estimated range 7.6 ft · Range midpoint 4.8 ft · Estimated screen size at this distance 103 in

These calculators give general estimates. Sizing, pricing, availability and standards vary by brand, retailer and country, so treat the output as a starting point and confirm it against the seller's or authority's own figures.

Formula and variables
W = S × a ÷ √(a² + 1); d_min = S × r × 0.6 × u ÷ 12; d_max = S × r × 2.2 × u ÷ 12; d_ideal = (d_min + d_max) ÷ 2

- u

- d_min/d_max
- Viewing distance range (ft)
Distance range = diagonal × resolution factor × use factor × 0.6–2.2 ÷ 12. Recommended size inverts the midpoint equation and divides by both factors; all values are heuristics, not viewing standards.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the recommended distance shorter for 4K than for 1080p?
The calculator applies fixed resolution and use multipliers to a broad distance range, then reverses the midpoint formula to estimate a screen size for the room. For the same room distance, the selected use factor is divided out when deriving size. The figures are planning heuristics, not viewing standards or personalized comfort advice.
