About this calculator

The grid estimate counts whole planting positions from bed dimensions and spacing. Staggered layout adds an approximate 15% and rounds up; actual capacity depends on mature plant spread and access.

Worked example

calculated with the default values below

Bed length 8 ft · Bed width 4 ft · Spacing between plants 12 in · Layout Grid (square foot style) · Row spacing (rows layout) 18 in Bed area 32.0 sq ft · Plants across the width 4 · Plants along the length 8 · Total plants 32 · Plants per square foot 1.00 pcs · Note Ensure every plant can reach its mature spread without crowding its neighbour

Formula and variables

N = ⌊W × 12 ÷ s_w⌋ × ⌊L × 12 ÷ s⌋

N
Total plants
W
Bed width (ft)
L
Bed length (ft)
s
Plant spacing (in)
s_w
Cross/row spacing (in)

Staggered layout: N × 1.15 (floored); 1 ft = 12 in.

Frequently asked questions

How does the staggered layout affect the count?

The estimate multiplies the rectangular grid count by 1.15 and rounds up. For an 8 × 4 ft bed with 12 in spacing, the grid is 8 across by 4 along (32 plants), so the staggered estimate is 37. This is a planning heuristic; leave room for mature plant spread.
