About this calculator

One mile per hour is 1.609344 kilometres per hour. Speed limits change unit at the border in several countries, so this is one of the most practical conversions for drivers. Swap the units to convert in either direction. The large result always uses the selected destination unit.

Method and assumptions

Formula basis and scope

1 mph = 1.609344 km/h. P1 consolidation retains the core model and adds input modes or derived outputs. The migration report records the input/output union and known-answer checks.

Only the displayed unit definitions are converted; rounding and measurement uncertainty are separate. Added display totals and migration adapters are implementation behavior, not independently validated claims.

Disclaimer

These calculators give general conversion results. Rounding and the precision of the value you enter both affect the output, so treat displayed decimals as indicative rather than exact.

Frequently asked questions

Why does 60 mph come out to 96.56 km/h and not a round number?

The conversion uses the exact factor 1.609344 kilometres per mile, so 60 mph is 60 × 1.609344 = 96.56064 km/h. It is not rounded to 97 because the formula is exact, not approximate. The tool also shows 26.82 m/s, derived by dividing the km/h value by 3.6 for the speed in metres per second.
