Frequently asked questions

Is the foot exact?

The international foot used here has been exactly 0.3048 metres since 1959, and an inch is one twelfth of it. The U.S. survey foot was slightly longer, but it was retired for new use on January 1, 2023; it remains relevant for historical and legacy records. Check which definition an old survey record uses before making a precise conversion.

Why twelve inches to a foot rather than ten?

The foot and the inch predate decimal measurement by centuries, and twelve divides evenly by two, three, four and six, which made it far more practical for construction and trade before decimal arithmetic was in common use. The same logic explains sixteen ounces to a pound and sixty minutes to an hour.
