About this calculator
This model weights grade points by course credits on its listed 4.0 scale. Schools may assign different points to letter grades, plus/minus marks, honors courses and excluded classes, so use your institution’s rules for an official GPA.
Worked example
calculated with the default values below
Letter grades (comma separated) A, A-, B+, B, B- · Credit hours (comma separated) 3, 4, 3, 3, 2 Grade point average 3.4067 · Total credits 15.00 · Quality points 51.10 · Courses counted 5 · Share of the 4.0 scale (%) 85.2 %
Method and assumptions
GPA = Σ(p_k c_k) / Σ c_k; percentage = GPA ÷ 4 × 100 GPA = Σ(grade points × course credits) ÷ Σ(course credits). The displayed percentage is GPA ÷ 4.0 × 100 for this model only; institutional scales and exclusions vary. This model weights grade points by course credits on its listed 4.0 scale. Schools may assign different points to letter grades, plus/minus marks, honors courses and excluded classes, so use your institution’s rules for an official GPA. Formula and variables
GPA = Σ(p_k c_k) / Σ c_k; percentage = GPA ÷ 4 × 100
- p_k
- Grade points for course k (A+ = 4.0 … F = 0)
- c_k
- Credits for course k
- GPA
- Grade point average
GPA = Σ(grade points × course credits) ÷ Σ(course credits). The displayed percentage is GPA ÷ 4.0 × 100 for this model only; institutional scales and exclusions vary.
Frequently asked questions
How does a weighted GPA differ from an unweighted one?
This calculator multiplies each grade-point value by its course credits, then divides total quality points by total credits. For a 4-credit A (4.0) and a 1-credit B (3.0), the weighted GPA is 3.8; the unweighted average would be 3.5.
Do credit hours change the result?
Yes. A course with more credits contributes more quality points and carries more weight in the result. The calculator expects one positive credit value for each letter grade, in the same order.
What does the percentage output mean?
It is the GPA divided by this calculator’s 4.0 scale, multiplied by 100. It is not a course percentage or an official transcript conversion. Schools may use different grade points, plus/minus values, weighting and course exclusions; check your institution’s policy.

What is a complete worked example for Letter grades (comma separated) = A, A-, B+, B, B-; Credit hours (comma separated) = 3, 4, 3, 3, 2?
Inputs: Letter grades (comma separated) = A, A-, B+, B, B-; Credit hours (comma separated) = 3, 4, 3, 3, 2. Calculation: GPA = Σ(p_k c_k) / Σ c_k; percentage = GPA ÷ 4 × 100. Results: Grade point average = 3.4067; Total credits = 15.00; Quality points = 51.10; Courses counted = 5; Share of the 4.0 scale (%) = 85.2 %.
