About this calculator

The newton is the SI unit of force. Kilogram-force and pound-force are the gravitational forces on one kilogram and one pound at standard gravity, which makes them convenient but not SI units.

Worked example

calculated with the default values below

Value 1 · From Kilogram-force (kgf) · To Pound-force (lbf) · Decimal places 4 Result 2.2046 · Newtons 9.8067 N · Kilogram-force 1.0000 kgf · Pound-force 2.2046 lbf

Method and assumptions

Convert force via newtons using the selected unit factor. Only the displayed unit definitions are converted; rounding and measurement uncertainty are separate.

Disclaimer

These calculators give general conversion results. Rounding and the precision of the value you enter both affect the output, so treat displayed decimals as indicative rather than exact.

Frequently asked questions

Why is kilogram-force not a true SI unit of force?

Kilogram-force is defined as the weight of one kilogram at standard gravity, so 1 kgf equals exactly 9.80665 newtons in the converter. The newton, by contrast, is the SI unit derived from mass times acceleration and is independent of Earth's gravity. That is why the tool keeps kgf, lbf and ozf as converted outputs rather than base units, and why 1 kgf (9.80665 N) is heavier than 1 lbf (4.448 N).

Which inputs and limits apply to Force Converter?

Use the units shown beside each field. These are form limits, not recommended settings. Value: -1,000,000,000,000–1,000,000,000,000 Convert force via newtons using the selected unit factor. Only the displayed unit definitions are converted; rounding and measurement uncertainty are separate.

What is a complete worked example for Value = 1; From = Kilogram-force (kgf)?

Inputs: Value = 1; From = Kilogram-force (kgf); To = Pound-force (lbf); Decimal places = 4. Calculation: F = x × kf ÷ kt. Results: Result = 2.2046 lbf; Newtons = 9.8067 N; Kilogram-force = 1.0000 kgf.
